Muirburn has been undertaken on the Invercauld hills for centuries- and possibly even millennia- to stimulate new growth of heather or grasses. Nowadays, the besoms used in the past have largely been replaced with leaf blowers to control the direction and extent of the fire. The equipment available these days also includes goggles, full face visors, flame retardant boiler suits and mobile fire extinguisher units to make the process as safe as possible.
